The Art of Changing Stereotypes

            I'm bringing down the curtain on a very difficult year, as it has been for  all of us with Cold Front From The Balkans.  Pera Museum was my favorite venue this year and hosted the most impressive exhibitions. At every expo which they hosted,  hit the bull’s eye and took me to another world. In this article I will talk about the last of these exhibitions, "Cold Front From The Balkans".

         Cold Front From The Balkans questions contemporary art, the artistic system in the Balkans and It gives you an in-depth look at contemporary art production. In this way, Balkan culture and art, which has been forgotten in Istanbul, is revived. When you come in, the catalogs of 6 main sections guide you through the exhibition. I think these little guides make all objects simpler and more understandable, and messages are easier to understand. 

The exhibition is based on six main themes: "Icons", "Ideology", "Revolutions", "Geography", "Art System" and "Body".

You can visit this exhibition which is hosted together with Pera Museum, Lüblian Museum and Galleries until 07.05.2017.

Kalıpları Değiştirme Sanatı

Hepimiz için oldukça zorlu ve sert geçen bir yılı, Balkanlardan Gelen Soğuk Hava ile kapatıyorum. Pera Müzesi bu yıl benim favori mekânımdı ve beni en çok etkileyen sergilere ev sahipliği yaptı. Ev sahipliği yaptığı her sergide de beni hassas noktalarımdan vurup başka dünyalara götürdü. Bu yazımda bu sergilerden sonuncusu yani “Balkanlardan Gelen Soğuk Hava” dan bahsedeceğim.

Balkanlardan Gelen Soğuk Hava sergisi, Balkan çağdaş sanatını, onun sanatsal sistemini ele alıyor ve Balkanlardaki çağdaş sanat üretimi derinlemesine incelemenize imkân tanıyor. Böylelikle İstanbul’da unutulmaya başlanan Balkan kültürünü ve sanatını yeniden canlandırıyor. İçeriye girdiğinizde 6 ana bölümden oluşan kataloglar sergi boyunca size rehberlik ediyor. Bence bu küçük rehberler tüm objeleri daha sade ve anlaşılır hale getiriyor ve mesajlar daha kolay yoldan alınabiliyor.

Sergi, “Simgeler”, ”İdeoloji”, ”Devrimler”, ”Coğrafya”, ”Sanat Sistemi” ve “Beden” olmak üzere 6 ana tema üzerinden şekillendiriliyor.

Pera Müzesi’nin, Lübliyana Müzesi ve Galerileri ile birlikte ev sahipliği yaptığı bu sergiyi 07.05.2017’ye kadar ziyaret edebilirsiniz.

Encounters from Akdeniz University

Why didn’t we encounter before?

   It was the best encounter in Pera Museum. This area which is the my favorite was hosted for young and contemporary art as usual. It was exciting. A lot of talented and succesful students from Akdeniz University introduced Antalya’s unique cultures and beauties, I took it for my blog through Pera Museum.

   I have never seen an exhibition such an elegant, understandable and simple like that for as long as I can remember.  Some of student who graduated and also continue the post graduate from Akdeniz University are gathering some artworks without  an exactly theme. They are showing a lot of captivating artworks with the best aesthetic positioning as like  painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramics, photography, tradational turkish arts and cinema-tv. With their definition; The display of the works in the exhibition embraces the idea, Those
methods and media are merely tools in artistic production. Each of works have enough beauty and shining for impressing you.

   There was five main section in this exhibition;

      Digital Universe-Publicity

      Documentary

   Nasıl oldu da karşılaşmadık daha önce?

    Bu ay karşılaşmanın en güzelini Pera’da yaşadım. Favori mekânlarımdan biri olan bu alan, her zaman ki çizgisini bozmayarak yine genç ve çağdaş sanatı evine konuk etti ve harika bir sergiye ev sahipliği yaptı. Akdeniz Üniversite’sinin birbirinden yetenekli ve güzel insanları bu sayede Antalya’nın eşsiz kültür ve zenginliğini İstanbul’a taşıdılar ve benim bloğuma da harika bir anı kaldı.

    Uzun bir süredir böyle zarif ve sade anlatımlı bir sergiye denk gelmemiştim. Akdeniz Üniversitesi mezunlarından, lisansüstü öğrenimine devam eden öğrencilerinin eserleri belirli bir tema olmaksızın küçük bölümlemeler ile bir araya getirilmiş. Resim, heykel, grafik, seramik, fotoğraf, geleneksel sanatlar ve sinema-tv gibi çalışmaları içeren birçok büyüleyici parçayı en estetik konumlamaları ile ziyaretçilerine sunmuşlar. Kendi tanımlamaları ile; yöntem ve mecraların sanat üretimi sürecinde sadece bir araç olduğu düşüncesinden yola çıkılarak hazırlanan bir sergi olmuş. İçeride bulunan her bir parça sizi içine alacak ve estetiğe doyuracak güzellikte.

How could a scent influence your emotions without being noticed?

After a short break, I decided to write about  Scent and The City. I’d recognized sense of smell on the book (Patrick Suskind-Perfume). He tells the story about someone which is the master of scent, also there is a movie about him if you want to watch. After a while, I tried to identify the scent which was the interwoven, but I could not. I think the animals more succesfull than us about that.

I do not know if you noticed before but we are tasting and smelling a lot of scent everyday. We have difficulty identifying and differentiating it because the sense of smell is the most disregarded. At least I feel that I have great difficulty about that.

You are going to turn back the clock with the scents from the Byzantines to the Ottomans and from the Ottomans to today in ANAMED’s exhibition (Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations – RCAC ) . The exhibition is going to bring you three answers about these questions;

1)      How are smell, memory and emotions related?

2)      How do we detect smells?

3)      Are we born liking certain smells or do we learn later in life what is a “good” or “bad” smell?

Also mainly scents which you will be experience;  mothball, raki, a gel- like soap, egyptian bazaar, grass, various spices and vegetation, coffee, cologne, honey etc… My favorite scent was the see. You can visit there until June 8.

Koku fark ettirmeden sizi nasıl etkisi altına alabilir?

Kısa bir aradan sonra bu ay bloğumda Koku ve Şehir sergisine yer vermeye karar verdim. Ben ilk olarak Patrick Süskind’in Koku adlı kitabında tanımıştım bu duyuyu. Kokuları ayırt etmek konusunda oldukça uzmanlaşmış bir koku ustasının hikayesini anlatıyordu kitap, hatta filmi de var izlemek isteyenler için. Daha sonra ben de bir süre iç içe geçmiş kokuları ayıt etmeye çalışmıştım ama başaramadım. Bu konuda hayvanların bizden daha tecrübeli olduğunu düşünüyorum.

Dikkatinizi çekti mi daha önce bilmiyorum ama her gün milyonlarca kokuyu fark etmeden içimize çekiyoruz. Bir çoğumuzun en ihmal edilmiş duyusu koku olduğundan sebep kokuları ayırt etmek konusunda oldukça da zorlanıyoruz. En azından ben bu sergide çok zorlandığımı hissettim.

ANAMED (Koç Üniversitesi Anadolu Medeniyetleri Araştırma Merkezi)’nin düzenlediği sergide Bizans’tan Osmanlı’ya, Osmanlı’dan günümüze kadar geçmişimizin kokularını içinize çekip geçmişe dönebilirsiniz. Sergide şu üç soruyu açıklığa kavuşturacaksınız ;

1)      Koku, bellek ve duygular arasında nasıl bir bağlantı vardır?

2)      Kokuları nasıl algılarız?

3)      Belli kokuları sevmek doğuştan mı gelir, yoksa sonradan mı öğreniriz?

Bunun yanı sıra, naftalin, rakı, arapsabunu, mısır çarşısı, çimen, çeşitli baharat ve bitki türleri, kahve, kolonya, bal deneyimleyeceğiniz kokuların başlıcaları. Benim favorim deniz kokusu oldu. Sergi 8 Haziran’a kadar gezilebilir.

Just Light and Colour / ZERO

Just wonderful !!!

Sahra Projesi / Sahara Project

This month, my favorite exhibition was Mack’s light and colour. Heinz Mack who is the leading artist
of German modernism and founders of the Zero movement which is an avant-garde art network with his 60 year career and over a hundred art work in the Sakıp Sabancı Museum.

I want to explain the Zero movement before describing that exhibition. The Zero movement came into being in Dusseldorf in 1957 that born as a response to the burnout, desperation and pessimism in the aftermath of World War II. The Zero is a movement that sets ground for a new beginning with the principle that “art must start from zero”.

You will be seeing combination between light and colour with his artwork in this exhibition which following of Zero that finished 10th Jenuary.

Also you will experience the forces of light from North Pole to The Sahara Desert with a lot of colourful, cheerful and peaceful artworks. There are two main artworks, one of them is work which made of desert sand, other one is easter mysticism’s monumental sculptures and kinetic works.

You can visit this exhibition until 17th July in S.S.M. which realized under the curatorship of Sakıp Sabancı Museum Director Dr. Nazan Ölçer and Exhibition Secretary of the Royal Academy of Arts, London, Sir Norman Rosenthal with the main sponsorship of Tahincioglu.

Tek kelimeyle muhteşem!!!

Ay sapması (Kromatik Takımyıldız) / Declination of the Moon
(Chromatic Constellation)

Bu ay ki favori sergim Mack’in ışıkları ve renkleri oldu. Alman modernizmin öncüsü ve Zero akımının üç büyük kurucusundan olan Heinz Mack bu ay 60 yıllık kariyeri ve yüzün üzerinde eseriyle Sakıp Sabancı Müzesi’nde.

Sergi ile ilgili detaylara girmeden önce Zero akımı ile ilgili küçük bir bilgilendirme yapmak istiyorum. Zero, II. Dünya Savaşı sonrası gelen yıkıma, tükenmişliğe ve olumsuz havaya bir cevap olarak 1957’de Düsseldorf’ta ortaya çıkmış “Sanat sıfırdan başlamalı” prensibiyle yeni bir başlangıca zemin hazırlamış bir sanat akımıdır.

10 Ocak 2016’da son bulan Zero sergisinin bir devamı niteliğinde olacak bu sergide Mack’in, ışığı ve yansıttığı tüm renkleri eserleri ile nasıl bütünleştirdiğine tanık olacaksınız.

Çok sayıda renkli, neşe saçan ve huzur veren eserlerin dışında, ışığın kuvvetle etki ettiği Kuzey Kutbu’ndan Afrika çöllerine kadar giden coğrafyayı, buradan hareketle çöl kumu ile yapılmış iki devasa yerleştirmeyi, ışıklı kinetik çalışmaları ile Doğu mistisizmini de sergide görebileceksiniz.

Sabancı Müzesi Müdürü Dr. Nazan Ölçer ile Royal Academy of Arts Londra eski Sergiler Direktörü Sir Norman Rosenthal’ın küratörlüğünü yaptığı ve Tahincioğlu ana sponsorluğunda düzenlenen Işık ve Renk sergisi 17 Temmuz 2016’ya kadar S.S.M’de görülebilir.

MASTURBATION

Each artist attends this exhibition with their own fiction and creation process, trying to make sure that this process is known and sensed, without any imposition, struggling to contour that state of existence in this world.”

There is an exceptional piece in Mixer that you should see void of personel taboo and prejudice. They have handled one’s  sex life in its purest form and yet in a way that most are too embarassed to talk about, hear of, or witness. The exhibition should be quite enjoyable and interesting for you, if you must simply ask yourself to think like Montaigne and say; “What act of sexuality has affected humanity to make it so that nobody can speak of it without being blushing?”

Masturbation is consist of multiple disciplines. They are seeking answers to the affect of whether this is a rebellious act or not and the origin of the meaning of masturbation. You will encounter art that was created using several different mediums; as ornate as painting, then the now common place platform of video. This degree of variation has become the norm for this exhibition. Their definition is this exhibition will be multi-disciplinary experience for you.

Masturbation will be open to the public until the 26th of March Also, I would like to add that I am sure that this exhibition will make face yourself.

Tüm tabu ve önyargılarınızı bir tarafa bırakıp görmenizi tavsiye edeceğim harika bir sergi var bu ay Mixer’de. Özellikle yaşadığımız toplumda her zaman görmekten, konuşmaktan ve duymaktan çekindiğimiz bir kavram olan “cinsellik” en saf haliyle ele alınmış. Eğer siz de Montaigne gibi “Cinsel Eylem insanlara ne kötülük etti ki kimse yüzü kızarmadan söz edemiyor ondan?” diye sorguladıysanız, sizin için oldukça keyifli ve ilginç bir deneyim olacaktır bu sergi.

Birden fazla disiplinden eserlerin bir araya geldiği sergide, mastürbasyon kelimesinin ilk anlamı ve bireyin kendi ile hesaplaşmasının açık bir isyana dönüşümünün mümkün olup olmadığı ele alınıyor. Hemen hemen her çalışmalarında olduğu gibi bu ay da sadece resim değil video, desen, performans gibi görselleri de deneyimleyebileceksiniz yani kendi tanımları ile multidisipliner bir deneyim yaratacaklar size.

Sizi kendinizle yüzleştirecek esprili ve keyifli bu sergiyi 26 Mart’a kadar ziyaret edebilirsiniz.

Art in Pop, Pop in Art

After residing in the U.S as a student for four months, I have returned to the life that is both colorful and swift while being noisy and tiresome in my place of birth; Istanbul, Turkey.  Two places completely opposed to one another on the basis of culture.

This experience has made me feel like a fish out of water. I need time to get used to new life and to get re-acclim to the ‘hustle and bustle’ of Istanbul. This should be simple, because I am surrounded by good people and the natural aesthetics of the land and season here are filling me with energy. They will aid me for the duration of my stay in Istanbul.

The Pera Museum, with its quality and extensive collection, offered me a place to breathe. In my opinion, it is the best museum I have encountered. There was an interesting event featuring video art that corresponded with pop music at the Pera Museum.

You can find pieces, in this exhibition curated by Javier Panera, that were created by prominent artists including Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci and John Baldessari.

The exhibition consists of five chapters approached rock & roll, pop, psychedelia, glam, punk, soul, disco music, hip-hop, indie pop, electronic music and music trends developed over the last fifty years.

I strongly recommend that you visit the Pera Museum. It is open until Feb 07.

‘Silindikten sonra hafızamızda derin bir iz bırakan ruj lekesi gibi’

Amerika’da geçirdiğim dört ayın ardından İstanbul’un renkli, hareketli bir o kadar da yorucu ve gürültülü hayatına adım attım. Birbirine bu kadar zıt iki yer kendimi sudan çıkmış balık gibi hissettirdi. Buna alışmak biraz zaman alacak olsa da bu sürecimi destekleyen en önemli unsurlar çevremdeki güzel insanlar ve doğanın bize sunduğu tüm estetik değerler olacak kuşkusuz.

İçinde nefes aldığımı hissettiğim en güzel ve kapsamlı mekanlardan biri Pera Müzesi oldu bu ay. Aslında yakaladığım en iyi sergiydi diyebilirim. Video sanatına dair çok farklı bir oluşum vardı bu ay Pera’da. Video sanatı ile pop müzik ilişkisinin aralarındaki etkileşim sıra dışı bir şölene dönüştürülmüş adeta.

Beş bölümden oluşan sergide rock & roll, pop, saykodeli, glam, punk, soul, disko müziği, hip-hop, indie pop, elektronik müzik ve son elli yılın müzik trendlerine odaklanılmış.

Küratörlüğünü Javier Panera’nın yaptığı sergide Andy Warhol, Vito Acconci ve John Baldessari gibi güçlü sanatçıların eserlerini de bulabilirsiniz.
